About the committee: The Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) is an intergovernmental organization established in 1997 to foster regional cooperation and sustainable development among countries bordering the Indian Ocean. With its headquarters in Ebene, Mauritius, IORA comprises 23member states and 10 dialogue partners. The association aims to enhance economic collaboration, promote balanced development, and ensure maritime safety and security within the region. Through its diverse initiatives and strategic dialogues, IORA addresses critical issues such as trade and investment facilitation, fisheries management, disaster risk management, and academic and scientific cooperation, hence contributing to the overall growth and stability of the Indian Ocean rim.
About the agenda: The agenda at the upcoming session of IORA covers discussing at length the critical issues of hijacking, piracy, and armed robberyin the Indian Ocean, more specifically about impinging factors on the trade policy framework and trade malpractices. Delegates would discuss strategies related to enhancing maritime security, effectively implementing anti-piracy measures, and ensuring safety regarding shipping lanes that carry international trade. The session shall further review current trade policies, pointing out the weaknesses exploited by illegal activities, besides providing robust frameworks for the prevention of trade malpractices. These discussions will target reinforcing the existing trade policies that seek to reduce these risks, further transparency, and fight trade malpractices that stunt economic growth.
